Description The Protomelas fenestratus, commonly known as the fenestratus, is a Lake Malawi cichlid characterised by a lattice-like pattern of vertical bars and thin horizontal lines. The “Tiger Nkanda” is a variant, found in the northern part of the lake, near Nkanda. These cichlids are peaceful and relatively quiet, thriving in large tanks with plenty of hiding places. Key Features of the Fenestratus and “Tiger Nkanda” Variant: Appearance: The fish’s body is marked by vertical bars and thin horizontal lines, giving it a window-like (fenestratus) appearance. Dominant males may have blue coloration that obscures the barring. Size: In Lake Malawi, they can reach up to 14 cm (5.5 in) in length. In aquariums, with good feeding, males can grow slightly taller, potentially reaching 15 cm, while females typically grow to about 12 cm. Habitat: They are found in various environments in Lake Malawi, including areas from rocks to sand, and even in rocky areas with sediment. Behavior: They are peaceful and can be kept with other peaceful mbuna species, though ample space is necessary. Diet: In the lake, they feed on invertebrates by blowing away substrate to uncover them. In aquariums, they readily accept various foods like spirulina pellets, mysis, artemia, cyclops, and shrimp-peas mix. Reproduction: They are mouth brooders, with the female incubating eggs in her mouth for about 3 weeks. “Tiger Nkanda” Variant: This variant, found near Nkanda in the northern part of the lake, has its own specific color pattern and trade name.
