The Mdoka White Lips is a beautiful Lake Malawi haplochromine cichlid, prized for its striking metallic blue colouration (especially in males) and distinctive protruding white/pale lips. It is relatively peaceful for a Malawi cichlid, active in open water, and a good choice for intermediate aquarists with spacious setups—their scientific name is Placidochromis phenochilus (Mdoka variant/locality). Originate from Lake Malawi (sandy/rocky areas around Mdoka, deeper waters. They are maternal mouthbrooders. This species rewards patient keepers with its unique looks and active behaviour in a well-maintained tank.TANK SET UP: Minimum tank size 200–300 litres for a small group (e.g., 1 male 3–5 females or a mixed group). Larger (400–500 litres) is strongly preferred for adults to reduce aggression and allow open swimming. Prefer sandy — they are sand-sifters and will forage naturally. Add rock piles, caves, and sight breaks for territories and hiding (especially for females). Avoid heavy planting (they may uproot or ignore plants); robust options like Vallisneria can work.TANK MATE: Best in species or Malawi hap/peacock tanks. They do well with other peaceful to semi-aggressive Malawians, such as Aulonocara (peacocks), other haps (Lethrinops, etc.), and some milder mbuna, if space allows.FILTRATION: Excellent, strong filtration and water flow (wavemakers recommended) mimic their habitat.MAINTENANCE: Keep nitrates low (<20–40 ppm); nitrite low (< 0 ppm.LIGHTING: Moderate — enhances their blue iridescence without stress.FEEDING: Staple high-quality cichlid pellets or flakes (protein-rich, sinking varieties are good). Supplements with frozen/live foods like brine shrimp, mysis shrimp, daphnia, bloodworms: occasional spirulina or blanched veggies (zucchini, spinach) for balance. Feed 1–2 times daily.
