Neon Blue Peacock Cichlid (Aulonocara stuartgranti ‘Chiwindi’ variant) is a stunning Lake Malawi peacock cichlid prized for its vibrant electric/neon blue colouration, especially in males. These fish are relatively peaceful for African cichlids, active swimmers, and excellent choices for community Malawi tanks. Beginner to intermediate (easy for experienced cichlid keepers). These are active, mid-to-bottom-dwelling sand sifters that display vibrant colours, especially males during courtship. They are more peaceful than mbuna but can be territorial.TANK SET UP: Minimum Tank Size 200 litres for a small group (1 male 3–4 females). A larger capacity of 400 litres is better for multiple males or communities to reduce aggression and provide swimming space. Length matters more than height. Use fine sand (allows natural sifting/foraging without injuring mouths). Add rock piles, caves, and hiding spots for territories and security. Some hardy plants (e.g., Anubias, Java fern) are possible but not essential.TANK MATE: Other peacocks (Aulonocara) or haps (e.g., Copadichromis, Placidochromis). Peaceful mbuna, like Yellow Labs (in larger tanks with plenty of space). Bottom dwellers: Synodontis catfish, Bristlenose plecos. Similar Lake Malawi species.FILTRATION: Strong filtration (4–5x tank volume turnover/hour). Perform 20–50% weekly water changes.MAINTENANCE: Ammonia/Nitrite 0 ppm; Nitrates <20–30 ppm. Feed 2–3 times daily in small amounts.LIGHTING: Moderate lighting to showcase colours.FEEDING: Emphasis on high-quality cichlid pellets/flakes as staples. Supplement with frozen or live foods like brine shrimp, daphnia, bloodworms, or krill. Include some vegetable matter (blanched spinach, peas) to aid digestion. Colour-enhancing foods help maintain their neon blues.
